The Porsche 917 is a racecar that gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the long-tailed version was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of over 254 mph (407 km/h).
In the 1973 Can-Am series, the turbocharged version Porsche 917/30 developed over 1,100 bhp (820 kW), and as much as 1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) in qualifying tune.
The 917 is one of the most iconic sports racing cars of all time, largely for its high speeds and high power outputs, and was...
Have you pulled your car up to the gas pump lately and been shocked by the high price of gasoline? As the pump clicked past $20, $30, $40 or even $50, maybe you thought about trading in your car for something that gets better mileage. Or maybe you're worried that your car is contributing to the greenhouse effect.
The auto industry has the technology to address these concerns. It's the hybrid car. There are a lot of hybrid models on the market these days, and most automobile manufacturers have announced plans to manufacture their own versions.
How does a hybrid automobile work? What...
Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. On route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros
Most people know that cars come with two basic transmission types: manuals, which require that the driver change gears by depressing a clutch pedal and using a stick shift, and automatics, which do all of the shifting work for drivers using clutches, a torque converter and sets of planetary gears. But there's also something in between that offers the best of both worlds -- the dual-clutch transmission, also called the semi-automatic transmission, the "clutchless" manual transmission and the automated manual transmission.
In the world of racecars, semi-automatic transmissions, such as the...
The 2004 Nissan 350z is a V6, 287 bhp sports car that can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. The body kit is somewhat radical in looks, yet the longer you look at it the better it becomes.
If you love this car, you will also love the remote control version. Powered by a .15 cubic inch, 2-stroke engine, the nitro powered model can reach a top speed of 27 mph. This is more than fast enough especially if you are new to remote control cars.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of the real 2004 Nissan 350z versus the 1/10 HPI Super Nitro RS4 RTR (w/ a Nissan 350z Nismo body kit). Also links...
Built in France, the Bugatti Veyron super sports car achieved a top speed of just over 400 km/h (248.6 miles/h) on the high speed section of the Volksvagen proving grounds at Ehra - Lessien. Thus, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 becomes the fastest production car in the world.
It has a very powerful engine pushing 1002 horse power!
Jaguar began life as Swallow Sidecars in 1922. Blackpool , a rather dreary town on the Western seaboard of industrial Lancashire; seemingly an unpromising launch platform for the car that became as inspirational in Hollywood or Hong Kong as it was in Buenos Aires or Beijing.
In the years following the end of the First World War, the young William Lyons appeared to be a pushy young motorcycle sidecar manufacturer with delusions of grandeur. Ambitious to move up to cars, in 1927 he used his Swallow Sidecars workers' coachbuilding skills to make bodies for Austin Sevens, giving them a status...
1890 Armand Peugeot quickly abandons steam for petrol and produces the first Peugeot petrol-powered four-wheel car, the Type 2, fitted with a Daimler engine, at the Valentigney factory.
1891 The Peugeot company name is changed to Les fils de Peugeot frères. In September, a petrol-powered four-wheel car, driven by Messrs. Rigoulet and Doriot, travels from Valentigney to Brest and back again - a round trip of 1375 miles - at an average speed of almost 9 mph.
1892 Peugeot produces 29 cars and is the first company to fit rubber tyres to a petrol-engined four-wheel car. Peugeot's Type...
This car has everything except a high class badge.
The 3.0 V6 feels like an ordinary saloon if driven in economy mode, but switch to sport and it'll growl, throw you back in your seat and take flight (not a good idea coming away from the lights with another car right in front of you).
It has a smooth Porsche Tiptronic gearbox, so you can drive in full automatic, or change gears yourself (sans clutch) if you prefer. The only probably with the manual gear mode is that if the car doesn't think the revs are right, it won't change until it's ready... defies the point a bit.
